Building materials and how they are used

A building material is a natural or human-made substance that can be used directly or converted for the construction of structures and buildings. Over the time man has used different construction material where some have been outdone while others are still used to date. Naturally occurring materials like rocks, grass, and, and wood are some of the commonly used materials for construction purposes. However, most of these
materials must be manufactured to fit the specific needs of a given structure.

Other commonly used materials are mined and segmented in the industries to make great building materials. Both natural and man made materials are manipulated through insulation, plumbing, and carpentry. It should be known that the choice of the building materials depends on various factors. This article will cover some of the common building materials and how they are used.

Common building materials

Stones

Stones

Stones are among the widely used building materials. Stones are found above and beneath the earth surface throughout the world. Stones are used in the construction of strong foundations of large buildings, airport and even other transport facilities like roads. Stones can be used directly, or they can be shaped by special machines before they are used. The reason why stones are the most used in most constructions is that they are sturdy and durable. They can be used to make strong foundations and even walls. Most stones are extracted from quarries while in some places they are found on the surface.

Metals

Metals features are among the predominant materials in the structural framework. Metals are mined and manufactured with various construction materials, in various shapes and designs, as seen on Prima Besi. Some of the metals that are commonly used include; steel, iron, copper and even aluminum. Each metal is used according to its specific properties.

Concrete

Concrete is made by mixing stones and sand along with water and cement. Concrete is used to harden surfaces whenever it is left to dry properly. This material is made and used instantly during the construction.

Timber

woodTimber is arguably the oldest building material. Our ancestors used to make their simple houses using wood and other vegetation like grass and bamboo trees. Nowadays, wood can be used in several ways. Prefabs are entirely made out of timber. Also, wood can be reduced to make ceiling boards, window frames, roofs and even doors. They are cheaper though cutting down of trees has been discouraged due to deforestation.
